Exodus 17:5-7 King James Version (KJV)
5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

Exodus 17:5-7 New Century Version (NCV)

5 The LORD said to Moses, “Go ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Carry with you the walking stick that you used to strike the Nile River. Now go! 6 I will stand in front of you on a rock at Mount Sinai. Hit that rock with the stick, and water will come out of it so that the people can drink.” Moses did these things as the elders of Israel watched. 7 He named that place Massah, because the Israelites tested the LORD when they asked, “Is the LORD with us or not?” He also named it Meribah, because they quarreled.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

5 The walking stick was to be used to strike the Nile. The elders was so that he wasn’t alone, often times God wants us to work with a group instead of alone. God has given us a purpose and when we know it, we need to be going to do it.

6 This was done because the people needed water, God in these verses are reminding how He provided. What God uses us to do is a testimony to those who see it, the elders were witnesses.

7 We may have this same question but if we truly look at our life, how can we not see the Lord there, if we are His, those who never have Him may not be able to see Him because they don have Him.
